How Long Should a Blog Post Be?

How much is too much and what's not enough when it comes to blog posts?

So what is the ideal blog post length? I guess there is a need to qualify this question a bit more though right? Shouldn’t it depend on your goals? What exactly do you want the post to do? What topic will your blog post be about? Realistically how much can you write about that topic?

This question pops into my head from time to time so I recently did a search on how many words you should have in a blog post. I don’t recall the exact search phrase I used. I found a few posts on this topic and verdict is? Over 2000 words! Yikes!

In the article 4 statistics every blogger should know about word count says the average word count of top ranked searches is 2046. But be warned! Marieke van de Rakt from Yoast says in her article that blog posts containing more than 1000 words can become hard to read. Make sure the post is well written or you’ll lose your reader.

I redid my search for “”How Long Should a Blog Post Be?” and her post was the top of the list of over 25,000 serp results. For search engine optimization she recommends posts being 300 words or longer. Her post, for me is highly credible for two reasons: 1) It came up #1 on the search result and 2) It’s a Yoast article. For me, the ideal blog post length was met!

The only bone I have to pick with Marieke’s post  is what happens if you really don’t have anything more to add to a post and it’s less than 300 words? Maybe you add an infographic like the one below I found from the great team at Buffer in their post Infographic: The Optimal Length for Every Social Media Update and More
