The Best Business Networking Event Ideas Aren't Talks
Thirty-four people registered. Twenty-six showed up. Nobody saw a slide.
That was deliberate.
Tracy Robinson runs Bruce Grey Hypnosis and serves as AREA 81's Chapter Lead for Saugeen Shores. When she ran Meetup 005 on July 30, she left the deck at home on purpose — she wanted the room focused on themselves, not on a screen.
I kept calling it a talk afterward. She corrected me twice.
“This wasn’t a talk. It was an experience.”
No slides, on purpose
During the event she ran us through a series of NLP techniques — anchors, a circle of excellence, a swish pattern, some work on quieting the inner critic.
Partway through she stopped and taught a little on learning styles, because she could see the room wanted it. She wasn't following a script. She was reading people and adjusting.
The promise for the evening was that you'd leave lighter. I did. Others told her the same on the way out.
The risk is the point
Around ten people in that room had never met her. Live demonstrations, on strangers, in front of everybody — with a real possibility of nothing happening at all.
But Tracy is a well trained and practicing hypnotist.
“We're so well trained that whatever happens, happens.”
That's where credibility comes from. Not from claiming expertise. From demonstrating it with the failure case sitting right there in the open. A speaker with forty slides risks nothing, which is exactly why nobody remembers them.
Get to, not have to
During our event debrief conversation Tracy caught something that stuck with me. I was explaining reinforcement, using squash as the example: to keep my game sharp I have to practise, I have to drill, I have to play, I have to train.
Tracy stopped me. Get to not have to. Two words, four seconds. I've been catching myself ever since. That's a fair sample of the whole evening — small corrections, delivered live, that stay corrected. It also names the thing most events miss.
Tracy worked with me early this year to help me deal with stress, lose some weight and to relax. It worked, and then I let it slide (I stopped going to see her and applying the techniques she recommended), which was my doing and not hers.
Being back in the room with her switched it on again. One good idea changes nothing. Reinforcement changes things.
What it did for her business
Five screenings were booked at the meetup. Three have happened; two are still to be rescheduled. Roughly $1,200 in net new revenue to date — from an evening that was free to attend, in a room where ten people had never heard of her business.
One event. No campaign, no funnel, no six-month content strategy.
That's what a peer network is supposed to do. That's why we started AREA 81 to provide entrepreneurs a network to share experiences and exchange value.
A member brings what they're good at. The network brings the room, the audience, and a warm introduction instead of a cold one. Nobody pitches anybody.
Before you attend another event
Ask one question about your next event: will anyone leave this room different than they walked in?
If the answer is no, you're coming to a talk. Talks are fine. They just don't grow anybody's business.
Want to know what it feels like?
Tracy Robinson works with people across Grey and Bruce Counties on stress, focus and change. One-to-one, or coming into your company to run an evening like this one.
This isn't stage hypnosis. Nobody clucks like a chicken. You stay aware and in control throughout. Book a free screening here.
If you run something in Grey-Bruce
AREA 81 is a peer network for entrepreneurs across Grey and Bruce Counties. Not a leads group. Not a breakfast club with a speaker slot to fill. It's members putting what they're good at in front of each other. Learn more about AREA 81, you can check out upcoming activities and join here.
